Anna threatens fast again, will keep IAC name

A day after he announced his new team, Anna Hazare today threatened to go on a fast again if the Jan Lokpal Bill is not passed before the 2014 parliamentary elections. After his last fast in August, Hazare had said that he would not embark on another hunger strike again.
Inaugurating his new office in the capital today, Hazare said: “I am ready to break that pledge (of not fasting again) in case the Jan Lokpal Bill is not passed by the government before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections... This time, I may fast at Ramlila Maidan.”
Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal said today that his group will not use India Against Corruption (IAC) as its name after the formation of his political party on November 26. “Anna is too dear to us. I have deepest respect for him. After launch of our party on November 26, we will not use IAC name,” Kejriwal tweeted.
Earlier in the day, stating that he considers Hazare his “guru”, Kejriwal said: “If he asks me to stop using the IAC’s name, I won’t use it.
Reiterating his earlier allegation that PM Manmohan Singh “cheated” him into breaking his Ramlila fast in August 2011, Hazare said the existing political leadership was too busy with scams to provide effective governance.
“We will seek donations in the name of IAC. People can donate in the name of IAC. Arvind’s organisation is PCRF (Public Cause Research Foundation),” said Bedi.

Hazare, on his part, urged volunteers not to indulge in a fight with Team Kejriwal, even as he announced the decision to open a bank account in the name of IAC with Sunita Godara, Kiran Bedi and Lt Col Brijender Khokhar as signatories.
“Yes, our team has spilt. But I believe both the paths are necessary. We thought that politics is not our way. We will not be enemies. A volunteer can choose his path. They should be clear in their mind. It should not be that they change minds frequently,” he said.

Want to see India join Afghan trade pact with Pak: Karzai

Afghanistan would like India included in its trade and transit agreement with Pakistan, in force since 2011, which would allow India to use Pakistan’s territory to trade with Afghanistan, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said.
“We have been seeking it,” he said an interview to The Indian Express. “This was not possible because of the difficulties between India and Pakistan but now that there is an environment for overall improvement of relations between India and Pakistan, this is the best day for Afghanistan,” he said.
Karzai felt Afghanistan would benefit a lot if that should happen, as it would bring in huge cost-efficiency in trade with
India. “The better it gets between India and Pakistan in all aspects of life, the better Afghanistan’s chances are of a better economy, a more prosperous country,” he said.
In Mumbai to meet business leaders and urge them to invest in Afghanistan in various fields, especially in minerals, petroleum and gas, he said Indian businesses should not shy away from investing in Afghanistan and security issues are not a threat to businesses. “No business has been hampered or slowed down by lack of security,” he said.
The presence of Pakistan and China in business in Afghanistan, he said, should not deter India.

How do Facebook ‘Like’ scams reach thousands of users?

If you look, you will find countless Facebook pages that have hundreds of thousands of likes and comments. But are these real? Some of the posts invite people to write a comment to see what happens. But predictably, nothing happens and this is all part of a large-scale Facebook scam.

These ‘stories’ then appear on newsfeeds and begin to resemble spam. The most common modus operandi for such Facebook scams is to attract people by getting their sympathy. This is easily achieved with images of sick children, wounded animals or details about some charitable organization.

How the scam functions
A page is created with a sympathetic message or an amusing anecdote to attract attention. The post is then shared publicly and people are called to perform actions like ‘like the page’, ‘comment’ or ‘share the page’. The next step posts the page on similar nefarious groups and spreads to hundreds of thousands of people via their newsfeed.

Once a page has garnered thousands of likes/comments, it is put up for sale. Someone who wishes to acquire the exposure of the page can purchase it and potentially misuse it. Certain details of the page can also be modified for malicious purposes. In this manner, anyone can get their hands on pages with high edge ranks to spam thousands of people, even though they may have the best anti-spam software. Such scams can spread propaganda, increase likes/comments, market something or even fool people into giving money or information.

Edge Rank and how it can be misused
The reason why parties resort to this trick is the money that can be gained via the ‘Facebook Like algorithm’. As a post gets increased comments/likes, its visibility rises. This page is then displayed to a greater number of people and this is beneficial to marketers in the short term and the long term.

This algorithm devised by Facebook functions on a platform known as Edge Rank. This is simply the score of a page based on various parameters and this score determines how useful the page actually is. In turn, this decides how many people will view the page. A higher edge rank allows a page to be displayed to more people in their news feed. Various factors that come into play here are affinity (closeness with the person), weight (embedded video or a link) and the time decay (relevance).

Unfortunately, there are many parties out there that misuse this platform. A high edge rank can be used to enhance brand exposure but it can also be used to bombard Facebook users with random messages and promotions that they are not interested in. Scammers also use this method to reach as many people as possible. All this has led to a process known as ‘Like buying’. This refers to the sale of Facebook fan pages and a simple Google search validates this.

Awareness about this technique and other Facebook scams is useful. ‘Like buying’ is quite a common occurrence and it can be misused in several ways. We recommend that you do not fall for manipulative messages or images that ask you for comments or likes.

Will the big Apple iphone 5 lose its flavor in India?

It’s got a bigger screen and many new applications. But Apple has dumped Google and settled for its own mapping application in iOS 6. It’s an innovation that brings over 200 new features, many of which will not be available in India.
The result is insufficient data to support map features for the country. There is access to standard/satellite maps and local search. Directions, turn-by-turn navigation, 3D buildings, business reviews, photos and real time traffic will not be available. The lack of country specific features that are inferior in quality to Google maps is predicted to cost the company heavily in India. Google’s free turn-by-turn voice navigation in India is a huge advantage to users. Apple is partnering with Yelp to provide ratings and prices of restaurants via Siri but this is not accessible with Siri in India either. There is no Twitter integration, Facebook integration or local search. Other features like films and TV shows from iTunes store and Dictation, which were not available to Indian users, are still not available the new Apple either. However, several other interesting features are planned to be introduced.
