In an annual survey, Delhi University has been ranked among the 100 best places to study English. The survey was conducted by the QS World University Ranking that is known to be one of the three most influential and recognized international university rankings in the world.
DU has been acknowledged to be in the same league as Pennsylvania State University, St Andrew's University and University of Sussex. Interestingly, DU's English has been rated as better than that of Nottingham University, University of Liverpool and Purdue University. Cambridge University ranked number one in the survey.
The reason for this high ranking has been attributed to DU's research and publications. DU also ranks high in MA students. Currently there are about 600 students pursuing their Masters. India is not ranked too high in technology but ideas of democracy and freedom fall under humanities that have in turn pushed up the ranking. The department is a part of the University Grants Commission's Special Assistance Programme.

Photo@business.rediff.com
The rules have changed. What was formerly a prerogative in the West is now the norm in the East. Younger Indian CEOs are increasingly overtaking American and European organization heads to lead as the highest paid in the world. The average annual salary for an Indian CEO below the age of 50 is about Rs 7.9 crore while those in America earn around Rs 7.3 crore. European company heads come a close second at Rs 7.8 crore.
“The younger CEOs are compensated better because of a higher concentration of first generation promoters passing on the CEO mantle to their heirs and family members” says Balaji E, MD &CEO, Ranstad India. Indian CEOs from the manufacturing segment earn the highest at Rs 8.7 crore while those from consumer goods follow next at an average salary of Rs 5.6 crore. However, private sector executive heads are compensated 21 times higher and enjoy more benefits than public sectors heads who average at about just 0.3 crore.
However, professional CEOs earn significantly lesser than their promoter counterparts and on fall way behind America and Europe. Across India, promoter CEOs earn 53% higher than professional CEOs, the study revealed.

One up on US First Lady Michelle Obama, Sonia Gandhi scores as the 6th most powerful woman in the world in the 2012 Forbes Magazine survey.
Last year she was ranked 7th! However, this year she scored one up on US First lady Michelle Obama. Once reluctant to take over the reigns of the Congress, today she is a force to reckon with, comfortably wearing the garb of power like a second skin. The list that ranks 100 women across the world is once again topped by the “Iron Lady of Europe” German Chancellor, Angela Markell, second year in a row.
Other Indian women to make it to this list are Indra Nooryi, Chairman and CEO Pepsico, ranked 12th; Padmashree Warrior, Cisco Systems Chief Technology and Strategy officer at 58th place; ICICI Bank Managing Director and CEO Chanda Kochar at 59th place and Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw at 80th place

India amongst the top in a unique growth study

Photo@photokore.com
Once again our people do our nation proud in a unique study – moustaches.
According to a global online survey by Hotels.com, an online accommodation reservations firm, to mark ‘Movember’, the moustache growing annual charity event for raising funds to create awareness on men’s health, Indian is second to only Mexico.
India shares the position with Germany with 12 percent online votes. Kazakistan was awarded fourth place, followed by the British, Austrians and Russians. Mexicans topped the chart with 41 per cent of the votes.
In India, the moustache has since time immemorial, occupied a major place in declaring the manhood of a man. A full, luxuriant growth signifies virility, especially in rural areas and in South India where busy, handlebar moustaches are still the rage. Traditionally, the moustache was the sign of the higher, warrior caste. Sons were allowed to shave their hair and moustache only after the death of their father. In the army, moustaches still prevail, declaring their fighting spirit, dominance and manhood.

India becomes the fastest-growing market for diamonds.

Photo@exportindia.com
With the price of gold escalating to sky high limits, Indians are now looking at diamonds with renewed interest. So far, Indians have been the biggest investors in gold while the Chinese dominated the diamond market.
Now the scales have tipped. This year, according to the World Gold Council, China overtook India in gold demand and India has risen to become the most enthusiastic market for diamonds. Forevermark, a subsidiary of the De Beers group says that India is now a priority for them. Their main competitor in the local market is Tanishq who is sweeping the youth market by their modern designs.
Lavish Indian weddings that invested more in gold are now diamond-centric. The biggest reason for this is that the value of gold is at an all time high in India, further bringing down demand by the devalued Indian rupee. Meanwhile, diamonds have become cheaper by almost 18% per carat. Prices of diamonds vary according to cuts and carats but unlike gold, prices are not official rates that change from day to day. Deals are based on personal transactions.
If prices of gold ride higher, traders worry that the yellow metal may well become a thing of the past in Indian weddings.

Swami advices Oprah Winfrey to eat with her hands

Photo@koimoi.com
n a recent talk show with Oprah Winfrey, Swami Nithyananda, was asked why Indians eat with their hands.
To this, the self styled Guru quipped back “Just like the West has benefited by accepting Yoga from India, they should also begin eating with hands. It’s one of the healthiest practices of time-tested civilizations.” He went on to explain that Indian sages went and settled in Africa to help them create their civilization which is why local Africans eat with their hands too. He invited the talk show host to return to her roots and eat with her hands to rediscover the joys of natural eating.
Oprah has drawn a lot of flak in India for her lack of awareness. In a recent visit for a documentary film on India, she asked the family who invited her for a lavish meal whether people in India “still ate with hands”. The remark ignited much criticism in the country where eating with the right hand is the custom. A TV show host tweeted that someone as inspirational as Oprah just did not get the pulse of India. Others said it reflected the clichés the west had of eastern cultures. In a statement to MailOnline, Harpo studios said that they enjoyed the country and culture and were touched by the people who shared their stories.

Thackeray’s condition still critical, unprecedented security in Mumbai

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray remained in critical condition on Thursday, with thousands of supporters gathering outside his Bandra (East) residence to pray for his recovery as doctors administered to him around the clock. On Thursday evening, senior Sena leaders said he was showing signs
of improvement and had been taken off life support, though he was still breathing with the help of a machine.

Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray late on Thursday addressed anxious Sainiks waiting outside Mato-shree. “Balasaheb’s health is stable and he is responding to medication. I believe in prayers, and I would also request all of you to continue praying so that he comes out of this illness. I have not lost hope. We are Sainiks [soldiers] of a warrior leader,” he said, standing on a chair without a mike. Uddhav was accompanied by his wife Rashmi and sons Aditya and Tejas.
Earlier in the day, Uddhav had emerged from Matoshree at 2am to calm the crowds outside.
Hours later, speaking to reporters outside Matoshree on Thursday afternoon, senior Sena leader Subhash Desai said: “Balasaheb is responding to treatment”.
By evening, the mood in the Sena camp was hopeful. Even the Diwali lights at the Sena headquarters in Dadar, switc-hed off on Wednesday night, were turned back on.
There was, however, no medical bulletin issued by the doctors attending to Thackeray.

Matoshree saw a steady stream of high-profile visitors, including state governor K Sankaranaray-anan, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, Opposition leader in the legislative council Vinod Tawde and industrialists Rahul Bajaj and Venugopal Dhoot.
Hours after actor Amitabh Bachchan and son Abhishek received minor injuries while making their way through the throng to the Thackeray residence, Salman Khan, Nana Patekar and Manoj Kumar, too, visited, amid heightened police presence. Thackeray has been unwell since July, when he was last admitted to Lilavati hospital for ailments related to the lungs and pancreas.

 Unprecedented cop cover in Mumbai
In one of the biggest mobilisation of forces in recent times, the Mumbai police made massive deployments across the city on Thursday as thousands of Shiv Sena supporters flocked to Matoshree in suburban Bandra where Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray continued to be unwell. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/11/16-11-12-pg-02-mumbai.jpg
A highly placed Mumbai police official told HT that over 10,000-odd men at police stations across the city were kept on alert and asked not to leave until further orders. All leaves in the force, from constables to officers, have been cancelled and those who were on leave were called back and asked to report to duty by Thursday noon.
Police stations in the western suburbs have been asked to maintain 100% attendance and cover all areas in their jurisdiction. Most senior officials, including Mumbai police chief Satyapal Singh, were monitoring the situation by patrolling on the ground or from their offices.
Even the crime branch maintained 100% staff presence in all its 12 field units, as well as those stationed in the centralised units, and would be deployed if need arises.Three additional companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed, along with 2,000 additional forces which were summoned from outside the city early on Thursday.
An additional 5,000 men were called in from the Mumbai police reserve, the Local Arms division, and pressed into duty. An additional force of the state reserve police force (SRPF) was also deployed at various points.  Officials said because of the tense situation in western Maharashtra on account of the farmers’ agitation on sugarcane rates, some of the force which was diverted to Mumbai could not be brought in.
The Mumbai police have made deployments at many sensitive areas because of the unabated rumour mongering on Thursday. Officials have assured the public that there was no security or law and order problem in the city, and that they have taken all possible precautions as a large number of party workers are visiting the city.

Shops shut, roads empty in Mumbai
Trains halted at empty platforms, traffic signals turned green to deserted roads and display windows in stores wore shutters as Mumbai chose to stay indoors when news of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s precarious health spread on Thursday morning.
While many stores decided to stay shut on their own amid rumours, in many areas Sainiks went around asking establishments to close down. Sena strongholds such as Dadar, Parel and Lalbaug were on the edge.
Andheri resident Smruti Nair rushed to buy groceries for the next few days just in case everything remains shut. “At 10am, I went to a nearby store to stock up on milk and other groceries, and just a few hours later, the store was shut,” said Nair, a sales executive.
By afternoon, several taxis and autorickshaws were off the roads and petrol pumps were shutting down.
“I couldn’t find a single petrol pump open between Mumbai Central and Mahim, because of which I had to go home when I ran out of fuel in my taxi,” said Dilip Gawde, a taxi driver from Vashi.
Most film shoots were also called off at Film City and other studios as producers anticipated law and order problems, said Naresh Mohnot, from the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association.
