Husbands, get ready to pay housewives salary!

The government is now seriously considering an interesting proposal made by the Women and Child development (WCD) ministry.
Husbands should pay house wives a monthly salary for all the effort they take to maintain a home. They believe it will go a long way in the socioeconomic empowerment of homemakers who feel unappreciated. WCD minister Krishna Tirath said that the work women do at home goes unaccounted for. Money is spent on cooks, cleaners and even children who are sent to a crèche. All these responsibilities fall under economic activity which, if recognized, could throw more accurate light on India’s GDP and offer a better account of unemployment rate. The minister has said that if a portion of a husband’s income is allocated to his wife, it is likely to be better spent on necessities to upgrade the standard of living. A survey has been conducted on the subject and more consultations are planned to see this proposal through. Several NGOs have supported the idea.
