Shiv Sena chief was admitted to Lilavati hospital's ICU in Mumbai on 25 July 2012 after he complained of breathlessness.As per reports on 14 November, he has stopped eating and is on continuous oxygen. Shiva Sainiks in the areas where the party draws support forced shops to close. These included: Vakola, Shivaji Nagar, Chembur, Navi Mumbai, Andheri, Parel, Dadar and Matunga, amongst others. In other parts of Mumbai, some shops voluntary closed citing the risk of untoward incidents should Thackeray's health deteriorate and possibly be fatal.On 17 November 2012 he breathed his last at 86 in his residence Matoshree,Mumbai after months of illness.he passed away at 3.33 pm in his house Matoshree after a cardio-respiratory arrest, his doctor Jaleel Parkar announced at Bandra, Mumbai

Delhi University’s English department ranked among the world’s best

In an annual survey, Delhi University has been ranked among the 100 best places to study English. The survey was conducted by the QS World University Ranking that is known to be one of the three most influential and recognized international university rankings in the world.
DU has been acknowledged to be in the same league as Pennsylvania State University, St Andrew's University and University of Sussex. Interestingly, DU's English has been rated as better than that of Nottingham University, University of Liverpool and Purdue University. Cambridge University ranked number one in the survey.
The reason for this high ranking has been attributed to DU's research and publications. DU also ranks high in MA students. Currently there are about 600 students pursuing their Masters. India is not ranked too high in technology but ideas of democracy and freedom fall under humanities that have in turn pushed up the ranking. The department is a part of the University Grants Commission's Special Assistance Programme.

New generation Indian CEO’s paid highest in the world

The rules have changed. What was formerly a prerogative in the West is now the norm in the East. Younger Indian CEOs are increasingly overtaking American and European organization heads to lead as the highest paid in the world. The average annual salary for an Indian CEO below the age of 50 is about Rs 7.9 crore while those in America earn around Rs 7.3 crore. European company heads come a close second at Rs 7.8 crore.
“The younger CEOs are compensated better because of a higher concentration of first generation promoters passing on the CEO mantle to their heirs and family members” says Balaji E, MD &CEO, Ranstad India. Indian CEOs from the manufacturing segment earn the highest at Rs 8.7 crore while those from consumer goods follow next at an average salary of Rs 5.6 crore. However, private sector executive heads are compensated 21 times higher and enjoy more benefits than public sectors heads who average at about just 0.3 crore.
However, professional CEOs earn significantly lesser than their promoter counterparts and on fall way behind America and Europe. Across India, promoter CEOs earn 53% higher than professional CEOs, the study revealed.

One up on US First Lady Michelle Obama, Sonia Gandhi scores as the 6th most powerful woman in the world in the 2012 Forbes Magazine survey.
Last year she was ranked 7th! However, this year she scored one up on US First lady Michelle Obama. Once reluctant to take over the reigns of the Congress, today she is a force to reckon with, comfortably wearing the garb of power like a second skin. The list that ranks 100 women across the world is once again topped by the “Iron Lady of Europe” German Chancellor, Angela Markell, second year in a row.
Other Indian women to make it to this list are Indra Nooryi, Chairman and CEO Pepsico, ranked 12th; Padmashree Warrior, Cisco Systems Chief Technology and Strategy officer at 58th place; ICICI Bank Managing Director and CEO Chanda Kochar at 59th place and Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw at 80th place

Indian Space centre helps the US track down Hurricane Sandy

In a reflection of growing collaboration between the Indian space Research Organization (Isro), Nasa and USNOAA, data on Hurricane Sandy was shared and showcased.
Nasa had approached Isro’s space centre based in Ahmedabad since its own Satellite stopped operating way back in November 2009. Designed to cover oceans globally, Isro’s satellite, Oceansat-2, had successfully tracked down ocean surface winds of Hurricane Sandy that devastated US East Coast, Cuba and many other countries. Oceansat-2 is Isro’s sixth remote sensing satellite, launched on Spetember 23, 2009.
It operates at an altitude of 720kms from which it transmitted data through the scatterometer’s image of the Hurricane, received early morning at 9.30 (IST).

India amongst the top in a unique growth study

Once again our people do our nation proud in a unique study – moustaches.
According to a global online survey by Hotels.com, an online accommodation reservations firm, to mark ‘Movember’, the moustache growing annual charity event for raising funds to create awareness on men’s health, Indian is second to only Mexico.
India shares the position with Germany with 12 percent online votes. Kazakistan was awarded fourth place, followed by the British, Austrians and Russians. Mexicans topped the chart with 41 per cent of the votes.
In India, the moustache has since time immemorial, occupied a major place in declaring the manhood of a man. A full, luxuriant growth signifies virility, especially in rural areas and in South India where busy, handlebar moustaches are still the rage. Traditionally, the moustache was the sign of the higher, warrior caste. Sons were allowed to shave their hair and moustache only after the death of their father. In the army, moustaches still prevail, declaring their fighting spirit, dominance and manhood.
